Battlefields Tours

It was among the picturesque hills and rock formations of this sweeping landscape that fearless, spear-wielding footsoldiers of the all-conquering Zulu kings first encountered the rampant British Empire's sophisticated fire-power... and where each faced the unfamiliar guerilla-warfare tactics of the Boer - descendants of the west European settlers who five generations earlier had claimed divine right to this 'Promised Land'.
Prophetically, the Zulu also believed the bountiful terrain between fabled Drakensberg Mountains and golden Indian Ocean beaches to be their own 'Heaven on Earth'.

The legacy of our Zulu Kingdom's critical, blood-soaked conflicts today lives peacefully-reconciled in this fascinating region's myriad Battlefield Sites, Historic Towns, National Monuments and Museums - and in HQs of the British regiments that make 'pilgrimage' to these fields of bravery and supreme sacrifice.

All at the Battlefields Route Association welcome you to our slice of the inimitable Kingdom of the Zulu, and look forward to sharing with you our insights, enthusiasm and know-how... plus a truly memorable South African experience!

Introductory Talk
From the Great Trek (1837), through the formation of the Boer Republics, the discovery of diamonds, the 1st Anglo-Boer War (1880-81), gold on the Witwatersrand and the ultimatum.
Duration: 1½ hours.
Location: On the hill behind the Lodge, overlooking the Thukela River valley with its backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountains or if the weather doesn’t allow, inside around a log fire.

Spioenkop:
Romantically situated on top of a hill with views that redefine ‘big sky country’; the tour tells of the bloodiest day of the war, played out a cast seldom challenged. On that hill were Louis Botha (the 1st Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa), Winston Churchill (voted the most famous Briton of the 20th century) and Mohandas Ghandi (the future Mahatma). The result of this battle confirmed that those early disasters of ‘Black Week’ were not merely beginners luck on behalf of the Boers – Spioenkop is arguably the most famous of all battles between the British and the Boers. Our tour starts from the Lodge, which is located in the middle of the British position and overlooks the attacking force’s mustering position, we head off in the bus playing our CD which takes us from the Boer invasion of Natal into the Battle of Spioenkop. You will spend two hours exploring the summit and become sucked in by the almost unbelievable tale, which unfolds on this emotive hill. After refreshments (there are flushing loos on Spioenkop) you return to the Lodge in time for lunch listening to a potted history of the rest of the war, the peace and the lives of some of the major role players.

Duration: 4½ hours.
Location: The tour starts at the Lodge, continuing in the bus with the CD, with 2½ hours on Spioenkop.
