Fishing in the Drakensberg

Fishing Overview:

Fishing is amazing in the berg as there is an abundance of trout and bass fishing. The berg is riddled with rivers and fresh water dams making it perfect for fly-fishing. The area contains both brown and rainbow trout which reach good sizes. The rivers and dams are well stocked with breeds that prove to have quite a feisty spirit. The lodge or hotel that you are staying will be able to direct you to the nearest good fishing spot. The fishing is made greater by the amazing tranquill surrounds.

As well as trout, the drakensberg is home to bass and carp fishing. Game lodges and dams through out the Drakensberg Mountains have these fishing opportunities. One of the more renowned places to fish is the Ntshingwayo Dam. There are Bass and Carp fishing competitions here on a regular basis. There is excelent trout fishing near Newcastle and near Greytown with lake Merthley being a popular spot among the local fishermen.

The Hotel has a village market that sells all the fishing paraphernalia you will need if you do not own your own equipment already. Champagne Castle - On site There are 3 dams at this hotel and day permits per rod are attainable at the shop THe shop hires out rods as well if you do not have your own rod to bring. Cleopatra Mountain Farmhouse - On site Rivers in the area are stocked with Brown Trout whilst the dams are stocked with Rainbow Trout. Fishing is available at Highmoor and Kamberg as well as our Little Mooi River on the property. Rods are available for hire from the Lodge. Oaklands Country Manor - On site Oaklands Coutry Manor is situated in the Northern Drakensberg, near one of the local villages. It features 3 well stocked dams that guests may fish in.
